1. Where is the Parking Office located? We are located in the lower level of the Memorial Union and our office hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
2. When can I buy my permit? We start selling student permits in late April for the coming school year. You may purchase your permit before you leave in the spring. Otherwise you should receive a mailed notification from us in June or July, which allows you to have an opportunity to purchase it before you arrive in the fall. If you have not purchased your permit prior to arriving on campus, make sure you buy one as soon as possible.
3. Can I use my permit in more than one vehicle? Yes, the parking permits are designed to be transferrable between cars. All you need to do is simply register the cars you may be using when you purchase the permit.
4. What if I arrive at campus and realize I have forgotten my permit in another car? We have temporary permits. You simply need to come to our office and let us know the license plate of the car you are using the temporary permit on.
5. What if I only plan to have the car on campus for a few weeks? You may purchase a temporary permit at the rate of $2.00 a day or $5 per week.
6. Do I need a permit to park on the street? You do not need a permit to park on the city streets north of University Avenue. You cannot park on Centennial Drive or most streets on campus that are south of University Avenue. You do need a permit to park on Stanford Road between University Place & Chester Fritz Auditorium.
7. How long is my permit good for? Our student permits are valid from August to August, and our Faculty/Staff permits run from December to December. Our permits are pre-dated, and we have to sell them for a specific year; however, if you only need a permit for one semester, you may return the permit for a partial refund.
8. Can I loan my permit to anyone else? No, the permit is issued to you, not the vehicle, and therefore can only be used by the person who purchased it.
9. What should I do if I lost my permit? You should report lost permits immediately to the parking office. If you are unable to locate your permit, you will be required to purchase a replacement permit. However, if it is recovered, you would then be reimbursed the purchase price of the replacement permit.
10. Do I have to return my permit when I leave campus? No, but often times you will qualify for a refund if you do. Check with the Parking Office.
11. What if I need a handicapped permit? We can issue you a temporary handicapped permit for up to two weeks with a doctor's note. If one is needed for a longer period of time, you need to first obtain a temporary or permanent state handicapped permit, bring it to our office for verification, and then we can give you a UND handicapped permit to match the dates granted by the state.
12. Is there a limit to the number of tickets I can receive? No, but if you receive more than eight tickets between July 1st and June 30th of the following year, any ticket after the eighth one carries an increased fee.
13. Do you ticket during breaks and the summer? Yes. We do have a considerable number of faculty and staff that are here all year, and they need to utilize parking daily. We do not ticket on days when the University is closed for legal Holidays. See our parking highlights for more information on this.
14. What coins can I use in the meters? Meters require quarters only. You should receive 30 minutes for one quarter. If the meter states its maximum time is one hour, it will only give that much time regardless of the number of quarters you put into the meter. If you park at a meter that is not working, you must report it immediately to the Parking Office. Some meters do not require money after 4:30 PM. You must read on the meter to see the length of time allowed and whether or not it is monitored 24 hours a day/seven days a week. You may also call the Parking Office to find out.
15. Do I have to notify the Parking Office if I change vehicles or license plates? Yes. It is to your advantage to notify the Parking Office of any vehicle change to protect you from being held responsible for tickets on a car you no longer own.
16. Where can visitors park? Since we have no control over when visitors will be arriving on our campus, it is the responsibility of the students, faculty, and staff to inform their guests about parking regulations. The only area we have specific visitor parking spaces is in our University Housing area. The best way to help your visitor is to bring him or her to the Parking Office to obtain a temporary pass for $2 a day or $5 a week and we can explain the campus parking to them. If visitors park in meters, they are required to pay the token coin to park there. No one is exempt from paying the meters. We also have a paying visitor's parking lot near Babcock Hall on Centennial Drive and Campus Road, and the parking ramp also allows visitors to park for a fee.
17. Are there places where I can plug in my car? There are a few places in University Apartments that have plug-ins.
If you have any additional questions concerning parking or permits, please call the Parking Office at (701)-777-3551 or visit the office in the lower level of the Memorial Union. |
